Out now, the powerful two-track EP marks MANTi’s sophomore outing on the highly regarded Mexican label, following the release of ‘Defiance’ in 2023.

Having debuted on Akumandra back in May 2023 with her critically acclaimed single ‘Defiance’, hotly tipped LA-based producer MANTi now returns to the Mexican imprint one year later for her eagerly anticipated second outing, as she presents her latest blistering new two-track EP ‘December Reverie’.

Returning to the CDMX-basedlabel now armed with an impressive string of additional career releases on the likes of Marginalia, Borders of Light, LSF21+, Einmusika, New Tab and Sequence Music over the past twelve months, MANTi’s latest release sees the Iranian talent showcase her diverse production credentials as she embarks on a mind-altering journey through consciousness on another remarkable musical opus.

The EP commences with the absorbing opener ‘No Turning Back’. Weaving with hypnotic purpose and melodic dissonance across its trippy seven-and-a-half-minute duration, the spellbinding cut delivers everything we’ve come to expect and more from the in-form producer, who continues to showcase her talents for creating highly nuanced and impactful electronic music.

On the flip, proceedings take a darker turn with the introduction of the title track and closer, ‘December Reverie’. Toying with sinister soundscapes and deep, rolling basslines, MANTI’s innate knack for forging commanding, peak-time melodic techno is placed front and centre, as she rounds out her first full-length EP on Akumandrain trademark style.

“I’m super excited to be returning to Akumandra following my first release with them in 2023. ‘December Reverie’ and ‘No Turning Back’ are both tracks that showcase the more emotional side of my sound, and I couldn’t think of a better home for them.”

MANTi

We sat down with MANTi for a Q&A session and talked about her powerful new two-track EP ‘December Reverie’, her artistic evolution, and the emotions driving her latest creations.

How would you describe your personal connection to sound and sound design, and what has influenced it over the course of your artistic development?

Over the years, my artistic development has been shaped by a variety of influences, from the early days of discovering electronic music through legends like Depeche Mode to the more contemporary sounds of artists like Four Tet. My exposure to different genres and cultures during my travels has also played a crucial role, blending elements from ambient, house, and techno into my work. Additionally, personal experiences and emotions have deeply influenced my music.

Can you describe the inspirations and creative process behind your new EP, ‘December Reverie’?

‘December Reverie’ was born during the winter months last year. The title track encapsulates the nostalgic and dream-like quality of looking back at the year, while ‘No Turning Back’ symbolizes the resolve and forward momentum required to move into the future. My creative process involved a lot of late-night sessions, where I would experiment with different melodies and textures until I found the right emotions.

What emotions or themes were you exploring with the tracks ‘No Turning Back’ and ‘December Reverie’?

With ‘December Reverie,’ I explored themes of nostalgia, contemplation, and the beauty of retrospection. It’s about those quiet moments of reflection where you appreciate the past while dreaming about the future. ‘No Turning Back,’ on the other hand, deals with determination and the courage to move forward. It’s a more assertive track, embodying the strength needed to embrace change and leave behind what no longer serves us. Together, they create a balance of introspection and action.

How does this EP differ from your previous releases in terms of style and production?

Compared to my previous releases, ‘December Reverie’ and ‘No Turning Back’ feature more complex and layered production techniques. I’ve incorporated a broader range of digital synths to create a richer, more immersive listening experience. The emotional depth is also more amplified in this EP.

How does it feel to return to Akumandra after your initial release with them in 2023?

Returning to Akumandra feels like coming home. The label has always provided a supportive and inspiring environment for my creative expression. My initial release with them in 2023 was a milestone in my career, and it’s exciting to see how both I and the label have evolved since then.

Looking beyond the new EP, what is there to come from you now? Anything you’re particularly excited about?

I have many exciting collaborations lined up with amazing artists such as Auggië, FAE, Schlepp Geist, to name a few. I also have a series of shows scheduled across Europe and North America, which I’m super excited about. The one that I’m most excited about is playing the Marginalia x Amaeo showcase during Off week in Barcelona on June 12th.
